Honouring the numbered treaties is essential for First Nations people to realize their full potential, says Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) Chief Perry Bellegarde.
There are reasons for hope, but injustices remain, Bellegarde told delegates at the FSIN Assembly at TCU Place Wednesday morning.
First Nations women continue to go missing or are murdered at alarming rates, Bellegarde said.
“The numbers are just staggering,” he said.
First Nations students continue to be starved for the funding which students elsewhere in Saskatchewan enjoy. The average First Nations school receives approximately $6,500 per student, he said.
