Perry Bellegarde’s commitment to First Nations people is exemplified not only in his official duties, but in the way he lives his life. It is an all-encompassing commitment that is his lifelong work.

Currently a Councillor for the Little Black Bear First Nation, Perry works diligently on behalf of his home communities. He serves on the Economic Development Advisory Board for the Little Black Bear Gas and Convenience Store, the local Balcarres School Board, the Cultural Advisory Board for the Saskatoon Public School Board, the Cultural Advisory Board for the Prairie Valley School Division, the National YMCA Board, and on community Boards for Ranch Erhlo, the Regina YMCA and the Globe Theatre. In Regina, Perry participates with the Women of the Dawn as the Master of Ceremonies, and sits on the planning and organizing committee for their annual fundraising event. He attends the annual Little Black Bear cultural camp, high school graduations, community feasts, round dances and ceremonies.

In 1987, Perry led the team that created the Annual Treaty Four Gathering, a week for treaty education, cultural and social events including a Pow Wow, talent show and round dances. In addition, he initiated and inspired the first annual Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Pow Wow, and has been Pow Wow dancing since his 30s.

Perry uses his life to serve others. Widely known as a consensus builder, he brings community people, leaders, Chiefs and Elders together to focus on collectively moving issues forward. He has been honoured by several Chiefs and Elders as they have acknowledged Perry as their adopted son. He honours them by carrying their teachings forward as he speaks to youth about treaties, self-determination and a shared vision for the future.
